Hair Care Isn’t About Perfect Routines
Share
Everyone’s chasing the “perfect routine” for their hair. But honestly? There isn’t one. What even is perfect, anyway?
Your hair is alive. It’s carrying your DNA, your sleep schedule, last night’s glass of wine, that time you skipped conditioner, the stress you’re holding in your shoulders. It changes with you, so no routine will ever be one-size-fits-all.
That’s why I tell my clients: don’t aim for perfect routines. Aim for ritual.
You might be thinking, ok wierdo, whats the difference? Valid question, my friend. My understanding is this:
Routine = autopilot.
You wash, condition, style because you have to, like ticking off a to-do list. It’s often rigid: same products, same steps, even if your hair or scalp are screaming for something different.
Ritual = presence.
You still wash, condition, style, but you notice how your hair feels that day. You adjust. You enjoy the process. It’s flexible, it responds to you, and it can even feel calming.
Step 1: Know Your Hair
Ask the basics:
-
Fine, medium, or coarse?
-
Straight, wavy, curly, or coily?
-
Thick as a forest, or lighter than it used to be?
Fine hair gets weighed down easily. Coarse and curly hair soak up moisture like a sponge. Straight hair? She’s shiny but shows oil faster.
Step 2: What’s Bugging You?
Dryness, flakes, breakage, or more hair in the shower than usual? Each has its own fix:
-
Dry hair → oils, masks, less washing.
-
Oily scalp → clarifying shampoo, lightweight styling.
-
Breakage → protein masks, gentle brushing.
-
Flakes → start with scalp care.
-
Thinning/shedding → don’t self-diagnose. Get checked.
Step 3: Build Your Basics
I call it the Cornerstone Haircare Ritual:
-
Cleanse – shampoo, gentle always.
-
Condition – match the weight to your hair type.
-
Treat – once a week, mask.
-
Protect – leave-in, oil and heat spray.
It’s like skincare. It only works if you do it consistently.
Step 4: Style Smarter
Heat protectant before you blow dry. A little oil on the ends, a drop for fine hair a little more for thick/course. Check out some of my youtube videos if your not sure.
What you don’t need: heavy silicones that fake shine but build up like lies in a bad relationship.
Step 5: Make It Ritual
Here’s the magic. Notice the smell of your shampoo. Take a breath while you massage your scalp. Even braiding your hair at night with a drop of oil can feel like self-care if you add a little intention.
It’s not about perfect. It’s about connection, with yourself, and with the body you live in.
