Why Your Slick Back Isn’t Working (And How to Fix It)

ive been seeing videos about how to do the 'Aussie slick back' all over my social media, have you?

Personally i dont rock a slick back, im a fringe girly. But If your slick backs never look smooth, it’s probably not your hair. In most cases, it comes down to the products you’re using, your tools, and your technique.

Here are my tips to help you perfect the perfect slick back on yourself, your friends or clients. If you prefer to watch the tutorial, you csn find it here on my youtube channel: https://youtu.be/CFHUUEWlHWk

#1 Stop Using Heavy Gel

A lot of people reach straight for gel, but it often makes the hair stiff, harder to control, and more likely to separate.

Instead, use something lighter. I like to use a lightweight oil, like my Serene Haircare argan oil, along with a soft hold product like th Osis sparkler. This helps smooth the hair without flattening it too much and gives a much softer, more natural finish.

#2 Create a Strong Base

The biggest difference in a slick back comes from how you secure the base.

Using a hair tie with two bobby pins attached (bungee)  allows you to anchor the hair properly without creating bumps. You secure one pin into the base, wrap the hair tie around, and then secure the second pin. This keeps everything tight and smooth without disturbing the shape.

#3 Section Your Hair

Instead of pulling everything back at once, start by sectioning the hair from the top of the ear up to the crown.

You can secure the top section first, which gives you much more control over the smoothness. It also allows you to keep a bit of volume through the crown if that’s the look you prefer.

#4 Work in Sections

Once your base is secure, bring the rest of the hair in gradually.

Smooth each section with a slick brush, add a small amount of product if needed, and guide it into the base. Taking your time with this step helps avoid bumps and keeps the finish clean.

#5 Finish the Look

When everything is secured, split the ponytail in two and tie it into a knot.

If your hair is longer, you can repeat this again. Then pin the ends into place and adjust the finish depending on whether you want it sleek or slightly undone.

Final Thought

A good slick back isn’t about forcing the hair into place.

It’s about using the right products, creating a strong base, and working with the hair instead of against it.
